Monogram Etiquette: Which Initials Go Where?
Choosing a monogram should be enjoyable. These familiar conventions can help you select the right arrangement.
A Personal Three-Letter Monogram
When the center letter is larger, the customary order is:
First name • Last name • Middle name
For Emily Rose Carter, the monogram would read E C R, with the C larger in the center.
When all three letters are the same size, initials generally follow normal name order:
First name • Middle name • Last name
Emily Rose Carter would then use E R C.
A Couple’s Monogram
For a couple sharing a last name, a popular arrangement places the shared surname initial in the larger center position, with each partner’s first initial on either side.
For Anna and James Baker, that arrangement would be A B J, with the B larger.
Traditionally, for a wife and husband, the wife’s first initial appears on the left and the husband’s on the right. Couples may also choose the order they prefer. If partners keep different surnames or use a hyphenated name, confirm their preferred arrangement before ordering.
A Single Initial
A single surname initial is a lovely choice for shared dinnerware and serving pieces. It creates a simple, coordinated look that represents the household. A first-name initial can also make an individual gift feel personal.
Choosing Monograms for Dinnerware and Gifts
For your family table: Consider a shared surname initial or a couple’s monogram. Use the same arrangement across coordinating pieces for a consistent look.
For a personal gift: Choose the recipient’s own initials. A monogram ring dish, catchall, or tray makes a thoughtful birthday, graduation, or thank-you gift.
For a wedding or anniversary: Check the couple’s registry or ask which initials they prefer. A monogram platter or serving piece can celebrate their life together without assuming either partner will change their name.
For a gift presented before the wedding: You may order a gift intended for the couple’s future married home, but confirm their planned monogram first. Traditional etiquette reserves use of a married monogram until after the ceremony.
Before placing any personalized order, double-check the spelling, initials, and desired letter order. Specify which initial belongs in the center when choosing a style with an enlarged center letter.
